Clockwise: The Music of Cedar Walton - Release Countdown Day 11, Saxophone Section: Peter Sommer

Peter Sommer has been one of the best on the Denver scene for many years. He is a member of the Ken Walker Sextet as well as Wil Swindler's Elevenet. He and pianist Art Lande have performed all over the country for many years. Peter is easily able to work in a number of contexts within jazz. Straight ahead, Post-bop, Free? Yes, and then some!

Peter has been on a number of recordings. As a leader he has four outstanding releases: Sioux County (2006) on Tapestry Records, featuring his original compositions in duo with jazz piano legend Art Lande, Crossroads (2008) on Capri Records, featuring a two-tenor frontline with the great NYC saxophonist Rich Perry, and Tremolo Canteen (2010) and Narrando Historias (2015) on Dazzle Recordings.

Peter serves as Associate Professor of Jazz Studies and Saxophone and at Colorado State University. I had the opportunity to work with him there from 2010-2013. Between playing occasionally at CSU and Ace Gillett's in Fort Collins (where Peter is a frequent soloist), I started to really HEAR him. It is always such a pleasure to play with Peter because no matter the situation he serves the music first. Zero ego! Off the bandstand he is a blast too... an extremely well-read individual.

On Clockwise: The Music of Cedar Walton, check out Peter's solos on Hindsight, Holy Land (including some blowing with Terell Stafford) and Black.

Clockwise: The Music of Cedar Walton available everywhere February 17.
