Clockwise: The Music of Cedar Walton - Release Countdown Day 12, Saxophone Section: Scott Turpen

Scott Turpen is an excellent saxophonist who is equally versed in classical and jazz music. I started working with Scott about 8 years ago at the University of Wyoming. For the last 15 years he has served as Director of Jazz Studies and Woodwind Area Coordinator. In August he will assume the role of department chair. Scott has two critically acclaimed classical recordings Tableaux and Crossover (which features the Phil Woods Sonata). He also works regularly with the Verismo Trio. Scott is also an accomplished jazz musician. He has worked with the likes of Louis Bellson, Doc Severinsen, Red Rodney, Ernie Watts, and Bob Mintzer.

I had the privilege of writing the music for Scott's debut jazz album Dance of the West (Dazzle Recordings). I had a blast writing for this project because Scott is is such an excellent technician. He'll play whatever you put in front of him. His warm sound and excellent intonation don't hurt either! Almost of all of the cuts on Dance of the West are first takes. Knowing all of this, Scott was an easy choice for my big band.
