Clockwise: The Music of Cedar Walton - Release Countdown Day 13, Saxophone Section: Wil Swindler

This project has been a success at every stage due in large part to Wil Swindler. Wil is a tremendous saxophone player, composer, and arranger. And equally great at all of them! Wil teaches at Colorado State University where he is Associate Director of Jazz Studies. True to form, Wil is one of the best at teaching the deep and varied skill set he has. He is a 2008 Gil Evans Fellowship winner and has written for bands all along the front range as well the USAF Falconaires and the West Point Jazz Knights.

As a saxophonist he has worked with Steve Wilson, John Fedchock, and Toshiko Akiyoshi. In the summers you will frequently find him working shows at Denver's Buell Theatre. Wil leads his Elevenet, one of the finest groups on the front range. Their latest recording is Universe B OA2 records. Wil also leads a hard bop quintet Goodrattle where he plays both alto and bari. Wil is a dedicated student of the music. Gil Evans, Sonny Stitt, Cannonball Adderley, Pepper Adams, are just some of the influences you'll hear in Wil's playing and writing.

Wil did a wonderful job producing and playing on Clockwise: The Music of Cedar Walton. To this day, I am amazed that he could play the session AND critically listen to the band. He plays two excellent solos on Cedar's Blues (check out the solo break!) and Martha's Prize.
